Jev Permission Gate: A Native Extension Replacing the Auto Mode Classifier

The author released the Jev Permission Gate extension, replacing Claude Code's auto mode classifier with Jev. In testing, permission checks were about 2x faster, with median latency dropping from 329ms to 164ms.

About this mod

After Claude Code mods were released, the author built a native extension called Jev Permission Gate, replacing the built-in auto mode classifier with Jev. In live session tests, Jev made decisions about 2x faster than the built-in classifier, with median latency dropping from 329ms to 164ms. Decision quality was comparable to the built-in classifier. The evaluation set contains 77 labeled cases. When uncertain, it falls back to the default classifier, and parallel processing reduces handoff latency. The author notes that testing is still limited and will continue to refine it. Installation: claude plugin marketplace add madisonrickert/claude-skills and claude plugin install jev-permission-gate@claude-skills. Source code is at github.com/madisonrickert/jev-permission-gate.

Installation

Check the author's README for the marketplace and plugin name first. Commands may change as the repository evolves.

Take a look and let me know what you think! My testing has been pretty limited so far (it's Friday and I have dinner plans) but I plan to keep dogfooding over the next few days and refining it further. My initial results: Against Claude Code's built-in classifier in a live session: 2× faster for Jev decisions. Median latency drops from 329ms to 164ms. Equivalent decision quality. Jev's verdicts agreed with the built-in classifier everywhere I tested. Eval suite size is 77 labeled cases. Anywhere it isn't sure, it defers out to the default classifier. Cheap deferrals via parallel processing. Since we're still early in the release phase, I have it set up so that the built-in classifier fires off in parallel with Jev's request; this further cuts latency for handoffs when they do occur.
