First, let's clarify the difference between a one-off prompt and an assigned role (agent). A one-off prompt is a method where you pass all the context with every input. Who it acts as, what it bases decisions on, what form the output takes. You carry all of that verbally each time.
With the approach of assigning a role, you fix that context in a definition file, and the only thing you pass each time is the request. The difference isn't intelligence—it's where you put the context.
In the case of Claude Code, at the top of the definition file you write name, description, tools, and model. name is what it's called, description explains when it should be invoked, tools is the scope of what it can do, and model is how heavily it should think.
